In the referendum held here on Sunday, the demand for a new constitution got an overwhelming majority. 78.24% of the people voted for it. Only 21.76% of the people voted in favor of the current constitution made 40 years ago. About 14 million people voted for this referendum.
On the overwhelming majority, people celebrated on the streets. The movement took place in support of demand for free education and payment of pension from government funds. President Sebastian Pinyera said on Sunday - "People have elected a constitutional council of elected citizens to agree on a new constitution."
Movement started due to increase in Metro fares
The demand to create a new constitution arose from the 2019 movement. The agitation was against the increase in Metro fares. Later, a demand for major changes was added to him. It joined the chain of major movements in 9 years. The movement gained momentum in October when 30 people were killed.
The current constitution of Chile was written during the era of military dictator Augusto Pinoshe (1973–90). More than 3000 people were killed during that period. Therefore, there was a demand of the people that the constitution of the dictatorship should be abolished and a new constitution should be written in view of the present time.
